Development officer: STEM Nation Award

This is an exciting opportunity to join Education Scotland on a 8 month secondment to support our STEM Nation Award Programme. The successful candidate will play an important role in engaging with early learning and childcare, primary, secondary and community learning and development settings to support all aspects of the programme which plays a pivotal role in Scotland’s STEM Education and Training Strategy. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved in other key areas of work relating to STEM learning and exciting developments around curriculum reform. The post is for 8 months initially but may be extended up to 23 months if further funding is confirmed.

The opportunity is for an 8 month secondment, with possibility of extending to 23 months.

Development officers support:

  • all aspects of the national roll out of the STEM Nation Award programme across early learning and childcare settings, primary, ASN, secondary schools and community learning and development contexts.

Closing Date: 3 June 2024 at 11:59pm

The anticipated start date for this role is the 12 August 2024.

Communication, engagement and promotion (50%)

  • Increase uptake of the STEM Nation Award across all sectors through highly-effective use of communication channels including social media and Glow and by pro-active engagement with networks and stakeholders.
  • Act as the main point of contact for the STEM Nation Award and respond to enquiries.
  • Develop STEM resources, support materials, case studies and videos in line with to share effective practice, ideas and approaches.
  • Ensure the STEM Nation Award pages on Education Scotland’s online web estate continue to be maintained and inspire engagement with the programme.
  • Work with regional and national STEM partner organisations to continue to grow our network of registered STEM Nation Award supporters.
  • Work in close partnership with Raising Aspirations in Science Education (RAiSE) Officers to ensure strong alignment of strategies and activities.

Managing the administration of the STEM Nation Award (25%)

  • Oversee the STEM Nation Award registration, submission and validation process ensuring that validators and STEM Officers are kept informed of local and regional developments.
  • Ensure all award data, information and processes are robust, accurate and up to date and fit for purpose.
  • Undertake effective evaluation of STEM Nation Award activities to measure impact and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate and deliver training to the team of validators supporting the STEM Nation Award programme and identify and recruit further validators as required.

Other duties (25%)

  • Support activity in relation to the curriculum improvement for the sciences curriculum and wider education reform being led by Education Scotland.
  • Contribute to wider activities of the STEM Team including professional learning support, advice, guidance, events, engagements and networks.
  • Take responsibility for their own professional learning and keep up-to-date with developments and research in relation to Scottish education.
  • Ensure activities are recorded effectively in line with expectations to support effective reporting at a national level.

The post holder will be expected to undertake other tasks consistent with the role that may be required by the organisation.

Qualifications, skills and experience

  • The post-holder should be educated to degree level.

Essential criteria

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) with the ability to engage, motivate and influence others.
  • Knowledge and experience of sciences and/or STEM education.
  • Proven experience of leading and managing projects.
  • Experience of effective engagement with stakeholders and networks and building strong partnerships.

You will stay on your current salary while on secondment. A small increase may be available to compensate working during school holidays.
