Strategic Framework for Parental Involvement, Parental Engagement, Family Learning and Learning at Home

What is this?

Findings from two mapping exercises showed that there were variations in the type(s) of professional learning opportunities, content, and timings of delivery, provided to the workforce on: Parental Involvement, Parental Engagement, Family Learning and Learning at Home.

This Strategic Framework has been developed in response to the demand for clarity on what practitioners need to know when engaging and working with parents and families.

Excellence in working with parents and families is recognised in the Strategic Framework as something which is acquired and nurtured over the career journey of teachers and practitioners in settings, childminding, schools and communities which are supportive.

Who is this for?

This Strategic Framework is for practitioners and educators who work with parents and families and/or are involved in delivering training to the workforce on:

  • Parental Involvement
  • Parental Engagement
  • Family Learning
  • Learning at Home

Strategic Framework coverWhat was done?

A Strategic Framework was developed to provide a structure within which stakeholders can engage in and deliver career long professional learning / continuous professional learning on Parental Involvement, Parental Engagement, Family Learning and Learning at Home.

Why?

Improving outcomes for learners, parents and families remains a key priority across Scotland’s political and educational landscape. In order to achieve this, there is an ongoing need to ensure that the workforce has the appropriate values, competencies, skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications to work effectively with learners, parents and families.

How to use this Strategic Framework to improve practice

It is recognised throughout the Strategic Framework that while there are mandatory elements for some sectors, providers and bodies, there are other key principles which are encouraged as being good practice for others who are currently not subject to legislative requirements.

Practitioners and educators should engage with the relevant key area(s) of the Framework to review and improve their practice where appropriate.
