Inspection approaches to support the Curriculum Improvement Cycle

A new project is focusing on inspections and the role it plays in the Curriculum Improvement Cycle (CIC).

The key aim of this project is for HM Inspectors to contribute to the systematic cycle of curriculum review.

The first phase of this project is to evaluate English language and literacy as a curriculum area. The longer-term vision is to introduce a model for the inspection of curriculum areas and inform wider system improvement.

To achieve the aims of the first phase, the project will:

develop a model of inspection for English language and literacy;
undertake inspection visits to establishment(s) in each local authority;
produce individual reports for establishments; and
publish a national summary report on English and literacy.

Throughout all aspects of the first phase of this work, HM Inspectors will ensure the views of learners and other stakeholders are represented. This may include capturing the experiences of those learning English and literacy at school, as well as the views of teachers, parents and carers.
