​How to use this learning and assessment resource to improve practice​

Teachers and practitioners may use this exemplar to reflect on their current practice to embed skills development across learning and teaching.

Larbert High School uses the DYW context to offer young people a wide variety of learning experience and work placement opportunities in collaboration with both the wider community and employers.

The school’s skills framework complements this agenda and ensures that all young people’s know, understand and are able to articulate their skill sets and are able to relate these to their career aspirations.

Improvement questions

​You are invited to reflect on the following questions:

  • In what ways do you ensure that you meet the need​s of all learners to develop skills for learning, life and work?
  • How do you ensure learners are able to record, evidence and articulate their skills development in line with their career aspirations?
  • How well do we engage children and young people in meaningful discussion about their skills development and assist them in profiling these to advance their career pathways?
  • In terms of skill development, how well do we capture the contributions provided by a wide range of extra-curricular experiences, youth awards and qualifications? (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh, City & Guilds, Edexcel BTEC, ASDAN, John Muir)
