Gender-based violence prevention and response: Equally Safe at School
Equally Safe at School (ESAS) provides tools, guidance and training for secondary schools. Use it to embed a whole school approach on gender-based violence (GBV).
Schools can register for a free Equally Safe at School account to access:
- whole school assessments to find out what the main issues are in your school community through focus groups and surveys with students and staff
- a student-led action group where students and staff work together to plan actions to improve their school culture
- teacher training to equip teachers with knowledge about GBV and the skills they need to prevent and respond to it
- policy development that makes sure school policies relating to GBV are clear, comprehensive and effective
- teaching resources to help ensure that the curriculum includes learning about gender equality and GBV
- monitoring progress to find out how well activities are working and how to sustain progress
How Equally Safe at School connects to other programmes
ESAS works alongside other tools by offering a broad framework for addressing gender-based violence.
It provides training and resources that can be used alongside:
- Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP)
- Rape Crisis Sexual Violence Prevention
Examples of using ESAS and MVP
Peer education sessions offered through Mentors in Violence Prevention can be a useful part of curriculum review. Schools using Mentors in Violence Prevention can use Equally Safe at School to:
- access resources for staff training and implementation
- monitor schools engaging with multiple programmes
- involve mentors in staff-student action groups
They can also include Mentors in Violence Prevention in their ESAS Action Plan.
